What Passport Rankings Measure
Most passport rankings measure travel freedom. In simple terms, they ask this question:
How many destinations can this passport enter without arranging a traditional visa before departure?
That can include:
- Visa-free entry.
- Visa on arrival.
- Electronic travel authorization, often called ETA or eTA.
- In some indexes, certain eVisa access may also be counted.
The higher the score, the easier short-term international travel usually becomes for that passport holder. The lower the score, the more often travelers may need a pre-approved visa before they leave home.
