Seven days is enough for a strong first trip to Georgia, but only if you choose the route carefully. This itinerary keeps the focus on Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Ananuri, Kazbegi, and Kakheti instead of trying to cross the whole country in one week.

That matters. Georgia is compact on a map, but travel days can still be slow. Mountain weather changes, wine-region visits need breathing room, and Tbilisi deserves more than a quick arrival night. The goal here is not to tick off every famous place. It is to build a first route that actually feels good while you are there.

Quick Answer: The Best 7 Day Georgia Itinerary

Best one week route for first-time visitors

Seven days is enough for a strong first trip to Georgia, but not enough to see the whole country. The best one-week route focuses on Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Ananuri, Kazbegi, and Kakheti. This gives you the capital, historic churches, the Georgian Military Highway, the Caucasus mountains, and wine country without rushing across Georgia.

  • Day 1: Arrive in Tbilisi
  • Day 2: Tbilisi Old Town, Narikala, sulfur baths
  • Day 3: Mtskheta day trip and more Tbilisi
  • Day 4: Tbilisi to Ananuri, Georgian Military Highway, and Kazbegi
  • Day 5: Kazbegi and Gergeti Trinity Church, then return to Tbilisi
  • Day 6: Kakheti wine region day trip or overnight
  • Day 7: Tbilisi buffer day or departure

Skip Batumi, Svaneti, Tusheti, Vardzia, Kutaisi, and too many cave towns with only 7 days unless one of those places is your main priority. They are not bad choices. They are just too far apart for a calm first week.

The one hotel change I do recommend is Kazbegi. A Kazbegi day trip is possible, but overnight is better because the drive is long and mountain views are weather-dependent.

7 Day Georgia Itinerary Overview

Best route structure: Tbilisi base -> Mtskheta and Jvari return trip -> Kazbegi overnight and return -> separate Kakheti day trip or overnight -> Tbilisi buffer
Best for: First-time visitors, food, wine, culture, mountains, and churches
Trip length: 7 days and 6 nights
Main base: Tbilisi
Recommended hotel moves: One move, from Tbilisi to Kazbegi and back
Best overnight: Kazbegi / Stepantsminda
Optional overnight: Sighnaghi or Telavi in Kakheti
Best transport style: Drivers or tours for Kazbegi and Kakheti, walking and metro in Tbilisi
No-car friendly: Yes, if you use tours, transfers, marshrutkas, or private drivers
Rental car: Optional, but not necessary for most first-timers
Best season: May-June and September-October
Winter note: Possible, with extra caution for mountain roads and weather
Skip on this route: Batumi, Svaneti, Tusheti, Vardzia, Kutaisi
Main mistake: Trying to see all of Georgia in one week

Day 1 - Tbilisi

Arrive, settle in, take a gentle Old Town walk, and keep dinner simple.

Day 2 - Tbilisi

Explore Old Tbilisi, Narikala, viewpoints, sulfur bath streets, and Georgian food.

Day 3 - Tbilisi

Visit Mtskheta and Jvari Monastery, then return for a relaxed Tbilisi evening.

Day 5 - Tbilisi

Visit Gergeti Trinity Church, enjoy mountain views if weather allows, then return to Tbilisi.

Day 6 - Tbilisi or Kakheti

Spend the day in Kakheti for wine, food, Sighnaghi, Telavi, or Alazani Valley views.

Day 7 - Tbilisi

Keep a buffer day for missed sights, weather delays, final food stops, or departure.

Why This Route Works

This route keeps Tbilisi as the anchor, which makes the week easier to manage. You do not spend every night packing. You get the capital, the mountains, a historic church day, and wine country without turning the trip into a bus-window marathon.

It also gives Kazbegi the time it deserves. The drive north is part of the experience, with Ananuri, Zhinvali Reservoir, Gudauri, and the mountain road all building toward Stepantsminda. Doing that as a one-night route feels much better than trying to race there and back in a single day.

7 Day Georgia Route Map

This week works best as a Tbilisi-based itinerary, not as one continuous road loop across eastern Georgia. Day 3 is an out-and-back trip to Jvari Monastery and Mtskheta. Days 4 and 5 follow the Georgian Military Highway to Stepantsminda for one overnight, then return to Tbilisi. Day 6 is a separate Kakheti trip built around Sighnaghi or Telavi, with an overnight only when wine country is a major priority. The map shows the structure and order of the trip rather than exact driving geometry. Check current road conditions, pickup details and access before travelling.

Recommended one-week Georgia route: use Tbilisi as the main base, take a short Mtskheta and Jvari day trip, spend one night in Stepantsminda via Ananuri and Gudauri, then choose a Kakheti day trip or overnight around Sighnaghi or Telavi. The route branches are separate trips rather than one continuous loop. Map created with QGIS. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.
Days 1-2
Tbilisi
Day 3
Mtskheta and Jvari return trip
Days 4-5
Kazbegi overnight and return
Day 6
Choose one Kakheti route
Day 7
Tbilisi buffer or departure

Route structure

Treat these as separate branches from Tbilisi. The individual map buttons help with place orientation; they do not combine the branches into one driving route.

Tbilisi base

Days 1-2 and Day 7: stay in Tbilisi for city time, recovery and the final buffer.

Kakheti choice

Day 6: choose Tbilisi -> Sighnaghi -> Tbilisi, or Tbilisi -> Telavi -> Tbilisi. An overnight can replace the same-day return, but the two towns are not compulsory paired stops.

Day-by-Day 7 Day Georgia Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Tbilisi

Treat the first day gently. After a flight, border formalities, bags, and a transfer into the city, Tbilisi is better enjoyed slowly than attacked with a checklist.

If you arrive early, take a short Old Town walk, get some GEL cash, activate an eSIM or local SIM if needed, and have a proper first dinner. Khinkali or khachapuri is an easy start. If you arrive late, skip the sightseeing and save your energy for Day 2.

Morning or arrival

Land at Tbilisi International Airport, clear arrivals, and get into the city without trying to overplan the first few hours.

Afternoon

Check in, withdraw a little cash, set up mobile data, and take a short neighborhood walk if you feel fresh.

Evening

Have dinner near your hotel. Keep it simple and choose a walkable place if you are tired.

Where to sleep

Tbilisi. Old Town, Sololaki, Vera, and Avlabari can all work depending on your style.

Transport

Taxi, Bolt, airport transfer, or public transport if it suits your arrival time and you have verified current details.

What to skip

Do not stack major sightseeing after a long flight. Tbilisi rewards slower pacing.

Use the Tbilisi Travel Guide and the wider Georgia Travel Guide if you want more context before choosing your first neighborhood.

Day 2 - Explore Tbilisi Old Town, Viewpoints and Food

This is your main Tbilisi sightseeing day. Start with Old Tbilisi, Metekhi Church, Rike Park, and the Bridge of Peace. Then take the cable car up toward Narikala Fortress and the Mother of Georgia viewpoint if the weather is clear.

In the afternoon, slow down around Abanotubani, the sulfur bath district. You do not need to book a bath to enjoy the area, but if it is something you care about, book ahead and compare current options.

Morning

Old Tbilisi, Metekhi, Rike Park, Bridge of Peace, Narikala, and the main viewpoints.

Afternoon

Abanotubani, bathhouse streets, coffee breaks, and a slower walk through nearby lanes.

Evening

Choose a Georgian dinner, wine bar, or food tour if you want more context.

Where to sleep

Tbilisi again. Keeping the same base makes the first half of the trip easy.

Transport

Walk where possible, then use metro, cable car, or Bolt for longer hops.

What to book

A sulfur bath, walking tour, or food tour only if it fits your travel style.

Do not try to finish every Tbilisi neighborhood in one day. This route gives you another buffer day at the end.

Day 3 - Mtskheta Day Trip and More Tbilisi

Mtskheta is the best short cultural day trip for this itinerary. It is close to Tbilisi, important historically, and easy to combine with Jvari Monastery without creating a punishing travel day.

Start with Jvari Monastery for the view over Mtskheta, then continue to Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and the old center. Dress respectfully for church interiors, and keep the day focused. You can add Samtavro if you have time, but this is not the day to cram in Gori, Uplistsikhe, and multiple extra stops unless you knowingly want a longer tour day.

This is an out-and-back day trip, and you sleep in Tbilisi again. Jvari and Mtskheta fit together without continuing north to Ananuri or Kazbegi; Day 4 starts as a new departure from Tbilisi. The map line is schematic, so verify current road access, pickup order and opening details before travelling.

Day 3 is a short return trip from Tbilisi to Jvari Monastery and Mtskheta, followed by an afternoon or evening back at the same Tbilisi base. The line shows the route structure rather than exact road navigation. Map created with QGIS. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

Morning

Jvari Monastery first, then Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Mtskheta's compact old center.

Afternoon

Return to Tbilisi for Dry Bridge Market, Rustaveli, cafes, or a lighter neighborhood walk.

Evening

Stay in Tbilisi and keep dinner relaxed before the Kazbegi travel day.

Transport

Private driver, taxi arrangement, tour, or marshrutka if you are comfortable with less structure.

What to book

A Mtskheta day trip only if you want easy logistics and a guide.

What to skip

Do not overload this with several distant stops if you want the one-week route to stay balanced.

Compare this option with other practical routes in the Best Day Trips from Tbilisi guide. A dedicated Mtskheta guide can be added when it is published.

Day 4 - Tbilisi to Kazbegi via Zhinvali and Ananuri

This is the strongest road day of the itinerary. Leave Tbilisi early and head north along the Georgian Military Highway toward Kazbegi. The route usually works best as:

Tbilisi -> Zhinvali Reservoir -> Ananuri Fortress -> Gudauri / Friendship Monument -> Jvari Pass -> Stepantsminda / Kazbegi
The Kazbegi overnight follows the Georgian Military Highway north from Tbilisi through Zhinvali, Ananuri and Gudauri to Stepantsminda. Gergeti Trinity Church is a short local branch from town, and Day 5 returns to Tbilisi along the same general corridor. Road conditions and access can change. Map created with QGIS. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

Ananuri is worth more than a parking-lot photo. Walk the courtyard, see the churches, and leave time for the reservoir views. From there, continue toward Gudauri and the higher mountain road. Weather, traffic, and road conditions can change, so avoid late departures and unsafe roadside photo stops.

Stepantsminda is the one recommended hotel move. Gergeti Trinity Church is local access from town rather than another long-distance leg, and Day 5 returns to Tbilisi before the separate Kakheti trip. Use this map for route planning, not exact navigation, and check current mountain road information before departure.

Ananuri is one of the easiest scenic stops on the road from Tbilisi to Kazbegi.

Morning

Leave Tbilisi early, stop at Zhinvali Reservoir, and visit Ananuri Fortress without rushing.

Afternoon

Continue through Gudauri and the mountain road toward Stepantsminda / Kazbegi.

Evening

Check in, have dinner, and enjoy the mountain setting if weather cooperates.

Transport

Private driver, guided tour with overnight option, marshrutka, or rental car with mountain-road caution.

What to book

A driver, transfer, or Kazbegi tour if you do not want to plan the road day yourself.

In winter, the same mountain route can need extra flexibility and current road checks.

Use the Ananuri Fortress Guide and the Kazbegi Georgia Travel Guide for deeper planning.

Day 5 - Kazbegi, Gergeti Trinity Church and Return to Tbilisi

Start early if the weather looks promising. Gergeti Trinity Church is the main Kazbegi highlight for most first-time visitors, especially when Mount Kazbek is visible. You can arrange local transport or a 4x4/taxi up depending on current access, road conditions, and your comfort level.

If you have extra time, you may add a simple nearby stop such as Gveleti Waterfall or Dariali Gorge, but be selective. Gergeti, Juta, Truso, Gveleti, Dariali, and the return drive to Tbilisi do not belong in one normal day.

Kazbegi is possible as a day trip, but one night gives the route more breathing room.

Morning

Visit Gergeti Trinity Church early and give the mountain weather a chance to work in your favor.

Afternoon

Add one light stop if conditions allow, then return to Tbilisi without leaving too late.

Evening

Sleep in Tbilisi. Choose an easy dinner after the drive.

Transport

Local taxi/4x4, private driver, tour transport, or marshrutka back to Tbilisi.

What to skip

Do not try to do every Kazbegi side valley and return to Tbilisi on the same day.

Day 6 - Kakheti Wine Region Day Trip or Overnight

Kakheti adds a different rhythm after the mountain section. Think wine, food, Alazani Valley views, Sighnaghi, Telavi, monasteries or estates if you have time, and a long lunch that should not be rushed.

For most one-week trips, Kakheti works as a day trip from Tbilisi. If wine country is a major priority, make it an overnight in Sighnaghi or Telavi. Just do not self-drive if you plan to taste wine.

This map shows the Sighnaghi option from Tbilisi. Telavi is a separate Kakheti alternative rather than another compulsory stop on the same day. Return to Tbilisi after the day trip, or stay overnight in the chosen town when wine country is a major priority. Map created with QGIS. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.

The image draws the Sighnaghi branch only. Telavi remains a valid alternative, not an extra stop to add automatically. Kakheti starts from Tbilisi after the Day 5 return, and a driver or organized tour is often the practical choice when tastings are part of the day. Winery availability, pickup points and access can change.

Kakheti works as a day trip, but wine-focused travelers may prefer an overnight.

Morning

Leave Tbilisi for Sighnaghi, Telavi, or a planned wine-region route.

Afternoon

Focus on a few tastings, food, views, and one or two cultural stops instead of packing the day.

Evening

Return to Tbilisi or stay in Sighnaghi / Telavi if you want a slower wine-region night.

Transport

Private driver or organized wine tour is usually easiest. Marshrutkas can work but are less flexible.

What to book

A Kakheti wine tour or driver if you want tastings without driving.

What to skip

Too many wineries, too many monasteries, and any plan that mixes wine tasting with self-driving.

Future Kakheti and Georgia food guides will be useful here, but I am keeping those links inactive until they are published.

Day 7 - Tbilisi Buffer Day or Departure

Keep the final day flexible. This is your safety valve for delayed mountain weather, missed Tbilisi sights, shopping, museums, a final sulfur bath, cafe time, or the airport transfer.

If your flight is late, you can add something easy like Dry Bridge Market, Mtatsminda, a museum, or a final food stop. If your flight is early, do not risk a long last-minute drive.

Morning

Use the time for a slow breakfast, market visit, museum, or missed Tbilisi neighborhood.

Afternoon

Shop, rest, repack, or keep the schedule loose if you have an evening flight.

Evening

Final dinner or airport transfer, depending on departure time.

Transport

Bolt, taxi, public transport if suitable, or pre-booked transfer for tight or late departures.

What to skip

A risky long drive before an international flight.

Alternative 7 Day Georgia Itinerary Ideas

The route above is the best default for most first-time visitors, but you can adjust it if your travel style is different.

No-car / low-stress route

Base mostly in Tbilisi, take a Mtskheta day trip, use a Kazbegi one-night tour or long day trip, and book Kakheti as an organized day tour. Best if you dislike logistics.

Food and wine-focused route

Give Kakheti an overnight and make Kazbegi lighter. Good for wine and food travelers. Do not self-drive if tasting.

Mountain-focused route

Add an extra Kazbegi day and reduce Kakheti or Tbilisi. Best for hikers and landscape travelers who can adapt to weather.

Winter route

Keep Tbilisi, Mtskheta, and Kakheti, then add Gudauri or Kazbegi only with current road and weather checks.

Where to Stay During This Route

Think in bases, not a hotel list. A good one-week route should reduce packing and still give the mountains at least one night.

Option B: 6 nights Tbilisi + Kazbegi as a long day trip

Best for travelers who dislike changing hotels. The tradeoff is a very long Kazbegi day.

Option C: 4 nights Tbilisi + 1 night Kazbegi + 1 night Kakheti + final night Tbilisi

Best for slower wine travelers. The tradeoff is more packing and more route management.

For Tbilisi, look at Old Town, Sololaki, Vera, or Avlabari depending on your budget and walking preferences. In Kazbegi, staying near Stepantsminda town helps with food and transport. In Kakheti, Sighnaghi and Telavi are the easiest overnight bases for most visitors.

How to Travel Around This Itinerary

You do not need one transport method for the whole week. Georgia is easier when you mix options.

Tbilisi city

Walk, use the metro when convenient, and use Bolt or taxis for longer hops.

Airport to city

Use taxi, Bolt, private transfer, or public transport if the timing and current route details suit your arrival.

Tbilisi to Mtskheta

Taxi arrangement, private driver, tour, or marshrutka if you are comfortable with less door-to-door convenience.

Kazbegi local transport

Use local taxis or 4x4 options where needed, depending on weather, access, and the exact route.

Tbilisi to Kakheti

Private driver or wine tour is usually best because tastings and self-driving do not mix.

Mountain roads can be challenging, winter conditions can affect routes, and public transport can be slower than it looks on a map. Do not rely only on Google Maps drive times for the Kazbegi day.

How Much Does One Week in Georgia Cost?

Costs vary by season, exchange rate, booking style, destination, and how much you use drivers or tours. Treat the ranges below as planning estimates, not current quotes.

Budget traveler

Often possible around USD 35-60 per person per day if you use hostels or simple guesthouses, low-cost meals, public transport, and limited tours.

Comfort traveler

Expect higher costs if you want boutique hotels, private drivers, airport transfers, guided wine days, and more flexible logistics.

The biggest swing factor is transport. Tbilisi itself can be good value, but Kazbegi and Kakheti become more expensive if you choose private drivers. That may still be worth it for a one-week trip because time is limited.

Best Time to Follow This 7 Day Georgia Route

May-June and September-October are the best overall months for most first-time visitors. They usually balance city weather, wine-region comfort, and mountain access better than the extremes.

Spring

Good city weather and greener landscapes. Early mountain access can still vary, so check conditions before committing to higher routes.

Summer

Good for mountains, but Tbilisi can feel hot and popular stops can be busier.

Winter

Possible with adjustments. Keep road and weather checks serious for Kazbegi or Gudauri, and avoid ambitious mountain driving plans.

What to Pack for One Week in Georgia

Pack for city walks, church visits, wine country, and a mountain overnight. You do not need expedition gear for this route, but layers matter.

Walking basics

Comfortable shoes, sunglasses, sun protection, and a small day bag.

Mountain layers

A warm layer and rain jacket for Kazbegi, even outside winter.

Church visits

Modest clothing and a scarf or shawl if useful for church interiors.

Practical items

Some GEL cash, offline maps, eSIM or SIM, power adapter, and booking confirmations.

Winter extras

Warmer layers, weather-appropriate shoes, and more flexibility in the schedule.

Documents

Passport, insurance documents if you use them, and screenshots of key reservations.

What to Skip With Only 7 Days

This is where the itinerary gets better. The most common mistake is adding famous places because they look close on a map.

Batumi and Svaneti are both worth planning around, but they should not look like normal stops on this recommended 7 day route. Save them for a longer Georgia itinerary unless one of them is your main reason for visiting.

Batumi on Georgia's Black Sea coast to save for a longer itinerary
Save Batumi for a longer Georgia itinerary unless the Black Sea coast is your main reason for visiting.
Medieval Svan towers in Mestia Georgia to save for a longer trip
Save Svaneti for a longer trip with enough days for mountain logistics.

Batumi

Tempting for the Black Sea, but it pulls the route west. Save it for a longer trip unless the coast is your main priority. See the Batumi Travel Guide for later planning.

Svaneti

Worth planning around, but too far for a normal first week unless the trip is specifically mountain-focused.

Tusheti

Remote, seasonal, and not a casual add-on. Save it for a trip built around high mountain travel.

Vardzia

A fascinating cave monastery, but it adds distance. Include it on a southern Georgia route, not this first-week loop.

Kutaisi

Useful if you fly there or head west. Otherwise, it is easy to overpack into a Tbilisi-Kazbegi-Kakheti week.

Too many cave towns

Uplistsikhe, Vardzia, and other cave sites are better chosen selectively. Do not turn the week into back-to-back detours.

Too many single-night stops

One Kazbegi overnight helps. Four hotel changes in one week usually does not.

Combining Georgia with Armenia or Azerbaijan

Possible on a longer Caucasus route, but usually too much for a first 7 day Georgia itinerary.

Practical Tips for This Georgia Itinerary

Keep Tbilisi as the main base

It reduces packing and gives you flexibility if weather affects mountain plans.

Book Kazbegi transport carefully

The route is beautiful, but the drive is long. Choose the transport style that matches your comfort level.

Do not self-drive after wine tasting

Use a driver or tour for Kakheti if tastings are part of the day.

Carry some cash

Cards are useful in cities, but small cash helps outside Tbilisi and with simple stops.

Dress respectfully in churches

Carry a layer or scarf if needed, and follow posted guidance at each site.

Check roads and weather

This matters most for Kazbegi, Gudauri, and winter or shoulder-season travel.

Keep Day 7 flexible

A buffer day makes the whole week calmer and protects you from small delays.

Visa rules, insurance requirements, border rules, and road conditions can change. Check official sources before booking and again before travel.

FAQ

7 Day Georgia Itinerary FAQ

Short answers for the planning questions most first-time visitors ask before booking one week in Georgia.

Is 7 days enough for Georgia?

Yes, 7 days is enough for a strong first trip to Georgia if you focus on Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Ananuri, Kazbegi, and Kakheti instead of trying to see the whole country.

What is the best 7 day Georgia itinerary?

Use Tbilisi as the base, make Mtskheta a return day trip, spend one night in Kazbegi via the Georgian Military Highway, return to Tbilisi, then choose a separate Kakheti trip before the final buffer day.

How many days should I spend in Tbilisi?

Plan at least 3 days based in Tbilisi. In this itinerary, Tbilisi also works as the base for Mtskheta, Kakheti, and the final buffer day.

Should I visit Kazbegi as a day trip or overnight?

Overnight is better for most first-time visitors because the drive is long and mountain views are weather-dependent. A day trip is possible but rushed.

Can I visit Batumi in a 7 day Georgia itinerary?

You can, but it usually makes the route too rushed. Save Batumi for a longer trip unless the Black Sea coast is your main priority.

Can I visit Svaneti in one week?

Svaneti is usually too far for a balanced first week. Add it only if the trip is built around high mountain travel and you are willing to skip other regions.

Do I need a car for this itinerary?

No. You can do this itinerary with walking, metro, taxis, marshrutkas, private drivers, and organized tours. A rental car is optional for confident drivers.

Can I do this Georgia itinerary without a tour?

Yes, but tours or private drivers make Kazbegi, Mtskheta, and Kakheti easier if you want simpler logistics and less route planning.

Is Kakheti worth visiting in one week?

Yes, Kakheti is worth including if you want wine, food, views, and a slower final day trip from Tbilisi. Use a driver or tour if tasting wine.

How much does one week in Georgia cost?

Costs vary by season, route, hotels, meals, and transport. Budget travelers may spend less with public transport, while private drivers and boutique stays raise the total.

Where should I stay for 7 days in Georgia?

Use Tbilisi as the main base, add 1 night in Kazbegi if possible, and consider an optional Kakheti overnight only if wine country is a priority.

Is Georgia safe for a one week trip?

Many visitors travel Georgia safely, but you should check official travel advice, avoid restricted areas, use normal city precautions, and take road conditions seriously.

What is the best time for this route?

May-June and September-October are often the best months for this route because they usually work well for Tbilisi, Kakheti, and Kazbegi.

What should I skip with only 7 days in Georgia?

Skip Batumi, Svaneti, Tusheti, Vardzia, Kutaisi, too many cave towns, and too many one-night stops unless one of them is your main priority.

Can I combine Georgia with Armenia or Azerbaijan in one week?

It is usually too much for a first one-week Georgia trip. Consider Armenia or Azerbaijan only on a longer Caucasus itinerary and check current border and entry rules.

Final Thoughts

A realistic 7 day Georgia itinerary is not about doing less. It is about choosing better. Tbilisi gives you the cultural base, Mtskheta adds an easy historic day, Ananuri and the Georgian Military Highway make the route north memorable, Kazbegi brings the mountains, and Kakheti gives the week a slower wine-region finish.

If you can make one upgrade, make it the Kazbegi overnight. If you need to simplify, keep Tbilisi as your base and use day trips. Save Batumi, Svaneti, Vardzia, Kutaisi, and bigger Caucasus combinations for a longer route.

For wider planning, use the Georgia Travel Guide, then go deeper with the Tbilisi Travel Guide, Kazbegi Georgia Travel Guide, and Ananuri Fortress Guide.
